Huge: Episode 5

July 27, 2010
by

In episode 5, Will and Ian (try to) write a song, Amber and Chloe’s boy drama continues, and we get more of the Dr. Rand + surveyor guy plot line. George gives some awkward (and maybe problematic?) advice on how not to push girls sexually. Poppy finally has a personality beyond obnoxiously cheerful. And we get Phantasma, a hilarious Twilight rip off. Discuss!

What did people think of Poppy coming out as asexual to George? I think it may have been the first time I’ve ever seen asexuality addressed on television. I liked that she was able to explain herself and her sexuality, but coming from a character that I generally find wholly hilarious, I wasn’t sure if her asexuality was supposed to be part of the joke.

Anyone else have any reactions to the scene?

I actually really dug Poppy coming out — and I love that she is an asexual that is cheery, spazzy, hippie-ish, and generally really normal (if a bit awkward) rather than a robot. Generally, I think Poppy is awesome.

Is anyone else getting serious closeted gay vibes from Trent, the jock? It may be that the series is trying to impart his secret longing to be more creative and artistic or some such, but between him following Ian around and his conversation with Alistair during the latest episode I’m really starting to suspect that he may be gay.

Of course, as this is regular ol’ TV and Alistair is the filling the “token gay” spot already I seriously doubt they’d have Trent come out. But wouldn’t it be awesome if they did?

(forgive me if I’m mixing episodes 4 and 5 I had them TiVo’d and watched them back to back.)

I was a little put off by the advice thing myself (but probably for different reasons than most). And who would have guessed the Chloe was the cause of the “no sleeping bag” rule.

With the way Poppy just casually mentioned her sexuality I don’t think it was a joke (I get the feeling her character is too happy and honest for that). I wonder where they’ll go with this.

I’m wondering about Trent. At first he seemed like there was going to be some real development with him but now it looks like he will be just another jock.

And with the way Will blew up on Ian I wonder if Becca will ever fess up that she read some of Will’s journal too.

I am so so so so so pleased that they finally added captions. Maybe the highlight of my life.
