Quick hit: Smart girls at the party!

September 25, 2010

This is actually my new favorite thing.  The super funny and amazing Amy Poehler has teamed up with her friends Amy Miles and Meredith Walker to create Smart Girls at the Party, a website, TV show, and community for girls to be themselves and explore their unique talents.  Each episode features an interview with a girl (usually ranging from about 8 to 13 years old) and “celebrates extraordinary individuals changing the world by being themselves”!  Yay!!

Every episode is amazing.  There’s 7 and 3/4 year old Ruby the feminist, skateboarder, and all-around deep thinker.  Kenaudra who plays the tenor steel pan and does praise dancing. The episode with Anna, an epicurean wizard, has a fantastic 20-second song by Amy Miles about a cooking party.  My personal favorite is 12-year old Rachel who builds robots!  It’s a great episode, but I think I am maybe a little biased because she’s a ginger like me and I also love robots.

The show has an amazing theme sing, with a chorus of “smart girls have more fun” and then some really great yodeling.  Also cool is that every episode ends with a dance party!  I watched an interview with Amy Poehler on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon where she talked about how girls are told really early to worry about how they look.  But when you’re dancing and having fun, you can’t look stupid because you’re being yourself!  It’s also fun to spot their famous friends dancing along with them (basically the whole cast of Parks & Rec + Will Arnett)!

I love this project because empowering girls to be themselves, to have fun, to be proud of who they are, to not care about what people think of them is so important.  It makes me happy to see famous people putting their time and effort into great projects like this.  Check it out at smartgirlsattheparty.com!
