Recently Jezebel quoted friend and fellow 2010 Carleton graduate Drew Chambers in an article musing about “when did you know you were a woman?”  The piece is a response to Drew’s piece,  “Am I a man yet?”, was first published in the Carletonian as part of Chase Kimball’s “What it means to be a good man” series, and subsequently at the Good Men project.  Both articles deal with looming societal standards interacting with real people.

I am inspired by these articles to delve into more questions about personal experience with categorization.  We live in the kind of society where people are heavily categorized, often to the detriment of understanding the people around us.  Those tags can be both burdensome and liberating, but no experience is alike and I find myself so interested in how different people experience, adapt, identify with, embrace, abhor, internalize, preach, fear, and know what and who they are in relation to how they’re labeled.

When did you know you were a woman?  When did you know you were disabled? When did you know you were fat?  When did you know you had an eating disorder?  When did you know you were multiracial?  When did you know you were poor?  When did you know you were beautiful?  When did you know you were addicted?  When did you know you were privileged?

So, when did you know?

I hope this can be an ongoing series for Happy Bodies, dealing with a range of identity issues.  If you would like to contribute to this series, you can email your piece to me at marvelousallie [at] gmail [dot] com, or fill out the form here: http://bit.ly/aGoh9r.  Anonymous contributions are always welcome.
