Food and Love and Memories

April 5, 2010

Jezebel is having a competition between cake and pie, to determine which is the ultimate dessert.  This article makes the case for cake to be the champion in this face off.

Why am I posting it to the blog? Because it is a beautiful celebration of the important role food plays in our lives. Surpassing simple nutritional necessity, food takes on cultural meaning, emotional connections, and embodies our memories of friends and family.

So even if I do not agree entirely with the perspective presented in the article (nothing says “welcome home” more to me than a big slice of apple pie), I think this is a lovely look at the very many meanings food holds and the roles it plays.

Totally agree. Love discussions about pie vs. cake, which were, incidentally, oddly prevalent at the day care I worked at in college. It produced one of my favorite preschooler quotes of all time:

Erin (age 4): “I like pie and cake. I like everything in the whole world. I like unicorns and Princess Leia.”

    My vote is for pie.

I’ve been ravenously following the Jezebel cake vs. pie brackets and it makes me sooo happy! I especially like when they write articles about the contests using sports language. This is so much more delicious than basketball!
