Johnny Weir

March 6, 2010

If you’ve been following the Olympics, or have been around the feminist blog-o-sphere, you’ve probably heard about Johnny Weir. He’s figure skater from the US. He’s a three-time national champion, and won a bronze medal at the 2008 Worlds. He’s currently ranked 8th 4th in the world (thanks to commenter JadedRose for the correction) and finished 6th overall at the 2010 Olympics.

But you probably haven’t heard any of that. You’ve probably heard that he’s “flamboyant,” “controversial,” and “GAY”. According to most news outlets, he’s the gayest skater out there and some people are even saying that he shouldn’t be allowed to compete because he posed for a photo shoot wearing high heels. WTF?!?!

A white man, wearing a black skating outfit up to his waist and high heeled shoes, stands alone in a bright room. He is looking down, not at the camera.

Instead of tearing this down myself, I’m going to let you watch this video that does it so much better than I could. (Via Sociological Images).

And then you should watch his routine to Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” because it’s FAB-U-LOUS!

I really hope Johnny Weir is getting a huge laugh out of the media comments. When they’re really nasty, he addresses them. But I think it’s kind of hilarious watching the media have NO IDEA what to do with Weir. Even though he’s not defined his sexual orientation (Gosh, is there anything else besides straight and gay???) – they still can’t not bring it up. They throw around “flamboyant” instead, because their viewers NEED to know he might not be straight, but they’re not allowed to say that.

Yeah, I know. And most of the media coverage isn’t even concerned with what his sexual orientation is, it’s just “OMG he’s so girlie, that’s SOOOOO wrong!”

Johnny has handled all of the narrow-minded BS with poise and grace. I’ve been a Weir fan since I first laid eyes on him at the 2006 Olympics; he’s a total class act.

I have one minor correction to your post: Johnny is actually the 4th ranked skater in the world, not 8th. Ice Network has devised some bogus ranking system that does not actually count toward anything (that’s the one that ranks Johnny at #8). In the official ISU (International Skating Union) World Standings, Johnny is ranked #4. The ISU standings are the official standings that are used to seed skaters for major championships, such as the upcoming World Championships.

Here’a a link to the ISU World Standings:
