Failblog fail

This is not a fail:

A white woman, wearing an orange bathing suit which dips very low down her middle and overall has very thin straps.

This is a woman wearing a bathing suit at the beach. I have to say that I don’t particularly like the bathing suit, but I don’t think that’s what the “fail” is about. Given that the title of the post on failblog is “Eye bleach! Eye bleach!!!!!” I’m guessing the poster (and readers) think that this woman is too fat (or too ugly, or too something) to be wearing this particular kind of swimwear in public.

Guess what? She’s not. She can wear what every kind of bathing suit she wants and it’s not your job to sit around being offended by her horrible fatness. oh noes! This woman does not have the body of a model, she should never be allowed outside her house! Quick, get the eye bleach!

Because I would definitely rather put a corrosive chemical in my eyes than look at that picture ever again.

Well, some hint of good taste is usually required when in public. It’s just common courtesy, people. I would never go out wearing a piece of dental floss, no matter what my body looked like. That’s the fail.

Yeah, my impression of this picture was not that she was being a fail for what her body looked like, but that it was a bathing suit fail. She can wear whatever she likes, but unless it is a nude beach, I think people might be getting a little more of an eyeful than they bargained for. Especially relating to the bottom half of her bathing suit, where it is clearly not performing its intended purpose. It’s important to know how to negotiate shared, public spaces with your personal tastes. I think her failure to do that is what the photo refers to.

Disagree. Do a quick google images search for “tiny bikini” and take a look at the websites posting skinny women in bikinis this make or smaller. No cries of “eye bleach!” there.

Body-wise she’s not great but not awful, and surely there are worse examples of this on the internet. She’s just over the line where you have to question her sanity. It’s not like she’s wearing a small bathing suit and posing or strutting around trying to look sexy… she looks like she’s just having a causal day that the beach wearing, well, THAT.

I think you’re missing the point here Chris – What Lisa is saying is that we don’t really have the right comment on her body or the choices she makes about it. It wouldn’t matter is her body was “worse” or she was “trying to look sexy” she’s allowed to have the body she does, and it’s incredibly damaging that we think we have the right to tell her what she should and should not wear.

And personally, I think being confident in your body and owning your sexuality IS sexy.

Actually, I think the bathing suit is attrocious. I don’t care if you are skinny or fat, this bathing suit should never have been created. Even a skinny person would have too much falling out of this thing!

Thanks for stepping in six months after this was posted to illustrate perfectly Lisa’s argument! See everyone, the person in that picture is a lady. She is wearing something. We should all have an opinion on that, and probably put our opinion on the internet. Preferably on a six month old post on a blog we’ve never read before. This is 100% how we should use our time in the world.

Good thing I keep a vast reserve of missed-the-point medals. Congratulations, anonymous!
