Quick hit: Is abstinence sex-positive?

October 1, 2009

Becky Sharper at Bitch takes on a thought-provoking reader question: Is choosing not to have sex sex-positive?

Sharper (as well as many of her commenters) arrives at yes. I agree as well, and I think it’s vitally important to discuss the choice to abstain from sex as a feminist, sex-positive, and body-positive choice–both to support the right to control one’s own body and sexual choices, and to wrest what Sharper calls “conscious celibacy” from the moral shaming that usually comes with it.

Valuably, we also gain a greater space to discuss self-pleasure and non-intercourse sexual pleasure, and to affirm those who are asexual as body positive as well.

Check out her piece (and the comments!).

Thanks for posting that, Jill! I really like Sharper’s use of the terms ‘slut-shaming’ and ‘prude shaming.’ I like to think of myself as a very sex-positive person, but I’ve often been on the wrong end of prude shaming for my reserved position in my own intimate life. Ultimately, no one should be berated for a healthy attitude towards sex!
