My Body, My Art

April 12, 2009

Jezebel featured the art of artist Ariana Page Russell this week, and I think their analysis was pretty on point:

As a woman, you rarely have the luxury of treating your body as simply the place you live. Our bodies are dissected and investigated in the public sphere, critiqued and pricked and analysed.

Russell’s art is absolutely gorgeous. She has dermatographia, an autoimmune condition which causes her capillaries to dilate when her skin is scratched. So she turns her body into art, and the results are beautiful:

Ariana shows how your body is an extension of your whole self. Her art and creative expression are inseperable with her body.
